Aspen Cutting at St. Olaf Natural Lands

  • St. Olaf Natural Lands 6009 330th Street Northfield, MN, 55057 United States (map)

Join Clean River Partners and St. Olaf Natural Lands as we remove fast-spreading aspen saplings from prairie habitat.

While beautiful in other ecosystems, aspens can overtake prairies, crowding out sun-loving native plants. Help restore balance and biodiversity by cutting them back. Dress for outdoor weather conditions; long pants and closed-toe shoes are recommended. Bring a water bottle, too!

Getting There + Parking

This pin is for a gate with a parking area that visitors can use to access the Natural Lands. As with many things, Google does not recognize that the road running south is not a real road, but a maintenance path that Olaf uses. There should be plenty of parking at that spot and just across the road if more space is needed.

About St. Olaf Natural Lands

The Natural Lands, encompassing over 430 acres surrounding the St. Olaf college campus, is centered on three primary goals: conservation, education, and recreation. Much of the areas that make up the Natural Lands have been restored from corn and soybean agriculture. Serving as a refuge for native species, the forests, prairies, and wetlands of the Natural Lands encompass a wide variety of niches allowing a multitude of Minnesota species to thrive.

Sign Up for our Volunteer Corps program!

The Volunteer Corps program is all about getting hands-on and making a difference in our watershed. As a Volunteer Corps member, you can jump into a range of fun activities, like restoration and conservation projects or educational events. Each opportunity is a bit different, giving you the chance to learn new things and grow while helping out in the community. If you care about keeping our water clean and like working with people from different backgrounds in our watershed, joining the Volunteer Corps could be just the thing for you!
